Ethical Standards

ETHICAL STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE


Three Year Goal: Establish and implement ethical standards of excellence at each grade level and/or course and hold teachers, administrators, staff, students and parents/guardians accountable for those standards.

HONESTY/INTEGRITY
Refusing to lie, steal, deceive, or cheat.

  • Courage: Courage to stand by one’s reasoned convictions even if ridiculed or belittled.
  • Being Trustworthy: Administrators, teachers, parents, and students will apply the principles of being trusted, responsible, and adhering to commitments or promises made.
  • Consistency in Policies and Rules: Administrators and teachers will not place each other in compromising situations by overruling established policies or rules indiscriminately. Students and parents should not expect exceptions would be made because they know an administrator or teacher.


RESPECT
Basic regard for human individuality, dignity, and worth.

  • Respect for oneself and for the rights of others. Administrators, teachers, parents, and students will display common courtesies such as “please,” “thank you,” and speech that does not include swearing, vulgar references, or demeaning personal descriptions.
  • Freedom and autonomy.
  • Respect for school and personal property.
  • Cooperativeness: Providing and promoting open dialogue among parents, administrators, teachers, and students.


EMPATHY/SENSITIVITY
Empathy and sensitivity to the feelings of others.

  • The ability to look outward instead of being self-centered and always thinking of one’s self first.
  • Be aware of extreme differences as a possible sign of reaching out and pay attention to what individuals say, especially if references are made to self-destruction, extreme hatred, or societal destruction.
  • Concern for and willingness to promote the well being of others.


RESPONSIBILITY/ACCOUNTABILITY
Personal and social responsibility.

  • Accountability for personal decisions and conduct.
  • The ability to recognize and think clearly about the relevant general principles and relevant factual questions in dealing with ethical questions and controversies.
  • The ability to determine and engage in the appropriate means of resolving disputes.
  • The ability to imagine realistically the consequences of one’s actions to self and others.


FAIRNESS
Equity and the common good.

  • Justice.
  • Equality of opportunity.
  • The ability to recognize when a claim is reasonable and when it is unreasonable, in view of the relevant evidence and supporting arguments.
