Special Education

August 12, 2015

Dear Special Education Staff,

I certainly hope you were able to get some much needed rest and relaxation with your family and friends during the summer. Within the next few days the school doors will open to Welcome our new and returning staff.

Join me in welcoming our new special education staff.  Jason Kinser, NMHS RSP; Tia Farrell, NMHS RSP; Louise Goldman, NJHS SDC; Thomas Benfield-Graves, NJHS RSP; Sue Bohmann, Lincoln RSP; Nakishia Lopes, Milani RSP; Georgia Vicente, Schilling RSP; Christopher Suess, Snow SDC; Camille Reyes, Musick SDC; Wendy Brown, Milani SDC; Rubilene Noguera, district behaviorist; and Yvette Helmers, school psychologist. I am truly excited to have them on board. And I’m even more excited about the expertise and skills they bring to NUSD.

Over the past three years we have accomplished a lot as a department. Some of those accomplishments have included, but not limited to; reducing the number of non-compliance issues from 42 to 3; implementing Special Olympics program; reducing our NPS students from 18 to 5; reducing the number of due process filings from 5 to 1; settling due process filings in mediation-only sessions; implementing the Common Core State Standards. These successes are all due to your hard work and dedication.

As a special education department, we will continue to focus on the District’s vision and initiatives while working to accomplish our department’s goals. The three major foci for this 2015-16 school year include; increasing inclusive practices for students with disabilities; training and developing district procedures for assistive technology and AAC assessment needs; implementing the department’s handbook.

Special Education aides will report to work on Wednesday, August 26, 2015.

Enjoy the remaining days of your summer vacation. I am looking forward to a productive 2015-16 school year.
